JCI accreditation: patient safety you can verify
Joint Commission International (JCI) assesses clinics against international patient-safety standards, from sterilization to informed consent. Here is what the accreditation covers, how it is checked, and how you can verify it yourself before you travel.
- International standards
- On-site surveys
- Status you can verify
Joint Commission International
Who is Joint Commission International?
JCI was founded in 1994 as the international division of The Joint Commission, a US non-profit that has been evaluating the quality of healthcare since 1951.
It does not sell treatments and it does not rank clinics. It publishes standards, sends independent surveyors to inspect organisations in person, and grants accreditation only to those that meet the standards.
Accredited organisations are found in many countries, so patients have a common yardstick whichever country they choose for treatment. For dental tourism this matters: it lets you compare a clinic in Istanbul with the care you would expect at home on the same safety criteria.
At LVK Poliklinik these standards sit behind our 3D CBCT planning, our sterilization protocols and our written treatment plans. You can read more on our certifications page.
Six patient-safety goals, in a dental clinic
JCI standards are organised around six International Patient Safety Goals. In dentistry, they translate into everyday safeguards like these.
Identify patients correctly
At least two identifiers are checked before consultations, imaging, sedation or surgery, so the right patient receives the right procedure.
Communicate clearly
Instructions and results are passed on in a verified, structured way between team members, and explained to you in your own language so that consent is truly informed.
Use high-alert medications safely
Local anaesthetics, sedatives and antibiotics are stored, labelled and given under defined rules, and your allergies are recorded before anything is administered.
Ensure safe surgery
The correct site, procedure and implant plan are confirmed before surgery begins, supported by 3D imaging and a pre-operative check.
Reduce infection risk
Hand hygiene, instrument sterilization and surface disinfection follow written steps that are monitored, not left to habit.
Reduce the risk of falls
Patients are assisted after sedation or long appointments, and the clinic environment is checked for hazards that could cause a fall.
How accreditation is assessed
Accreditation is not a certificate you buy. It is earned through a structured review, and it has to be renewed.
- 1
Self-assessment and application
The clinic reviews its own processes against the JCI standards, closes the gaps it finds and applies for a survey.
- 2
On-site survey
Independent clinical surveyors visit in person. They inspect rooms and equipment, read policies and records, and interview the team.
- 3
Tracer methodology
Surveyors follow the path of real patients, from first contact to aftercare, to check that written policies match what actually happens every day.
- 4
Findings and decision
Any gaps need a documented corrective action. Accreditation is awarded only when the standards are met.
- 5
Continuous compliance
Accreditation does not last forever. The clinic is re-surveyed on a regular cycle, usually every three years, and must keep its standards up between visits.
What it means for your treatment
Accreditation is about how care is organised around you, from your first message to your return home.
Consistent protocols
Written procedures for examination, surgery and sterilization, followed by the whole team and not only by one dentist.
Documented records
Consents, treatment plans and materials are recorded in a defined way, so your history can be shared with your dentist at home.
Verified staff
The qualifications and training of clinical staff are checked and kept on file. Meet the surgeons on our doctors page.
Learning from incidents
Incidents and near-misses are reviewed, so processes improve over time instead of repeating the same problem.
How to verify any clinic’s accreditation
A logo on a website is not proof. These five checks take a few minutes and apply to every clinic you consider, including ours.
- Ask for the certificateRequest a copy and check the organisation’s name, address and validity dates.
- Check the official listCompare the details with JCI’s own list of accredited organisations, not with a third-party site.
- Confirm the scopeAccreditation applies to the organisation and location that were surveyed. Make sure it covers the address where you will be treated.
- Look at the dateAccreditation is time-limited. An expired certificate is not a current one.
- Get the rest in writingAsk for the surgeon’s licence, implant brand details and warranty terms. Our guide to planning a dental holiday lists what to request.
JCI accreditation is not a guarantee of any treatment outcome. It shows that a clinic’s safety processes were assessed against international standards. Suitability, risks, timing and cost are confirmed after your examination and 3D imaging.
JCI accreditation: common questions
What does JCI accreditation mean for a dental clinic?
It means an independent international body has assessed the clinic's processes against published patient-safety and quality standards. Surveyors visit in person and check areas such as patient identification, infection prevention, medication safety, informed consent and staff qualifications.
Is JCI the same as ISO 9001?
No. ISO 9001 is a general quality-management standard that any type of organisation can hold. JCI is specific to healthcare and looks at clinical care and patient safety, with surveyors observing real patient pathways on site. Some clinics hold both, and they answer different questions.
Does JCI accreditation guarantee my treatment result?
No. Results depend on your anatomy, health, the treatment plan and aftercare. Accreditation shows that the clinic's safety processes were assessed against international standards. It is one reassuring signal, alongside the surgeon's experience, the materials used and a written plan.
How long does JCI accreditation last?
Accreditation is time-limited, and organisations are re-surveyed on a regular cycle, usually every three years. This is why you should check that a certificate is current and not only that a logo appears on a website.
How can I check a clinic's JCI status?
Ask the clinic for a copy of its certificate and compare the organisation's name, address and validity dates with JCI's official list of accredited organisations. Also confirm that the accreditation covers the location where your treatment will take place.
Is JCI accreditation compulsory in Turkey?
No. It is voluntary. Dental clinics in Turkey must be licensed by the Ministry of Health, and JCI is an additional, international layer of assessment that clinics choose to undergo. Our guide on whether dental work in Turkey is safe explains what else to check.
Can I see your certificate before I book?
Yes. You are welcome to ask for a copy of our current certificate and to check it independently. We encourage every patient to do the same with any clinic they are considering.
